Kemper released an MBritt Free Rig Pack a couple of years ago and now those rigs come stock in new Kempers. Kemper selected 50 profiles out of my existing packs (at the time) and I just adjusted the prices down to compensate. You can see what profiles/amps those are and what packs they came from here: Free Rig Pack Cross Reference.

I highly recommend using Kemper’s Rig Manager software available through the Kemper web site. You will need a Kemper and an account to download the software but I highly recommend doing this as it is the easiest way to update the Kemper firmware.

You can also use a USB stick to import Kemper rigs into the Kemper directly, but if you are using firmware 7.x and higher, you will need to convert the files to .krig files before the Kemper will recognize them. The newest packs with .krig files work fine directly into the shared folder of a formatted USB stick.

I find it easiest to use Rig Manager (making sure you are current on both firmware and RM software with Kemper connected to computer via USB):

  1. Unzip Kemper files from your download
  2. Open Rig Manager and locate “All Presets” and “All Performances” sections on the left panel of Rig Manager
  3. Under each of those you will see “local library”
  4. You can copy/drag your new presets that you downloaded and unzipped into the matching “local library” sections.  Presets can be dragged straight into your Profiler or Local Library.  Performances have to go in Local Library first and then copied into a Performance location.

You can see a brief tutorial here:

and here is a video on importing Presets:

While I try to select guitars and pickups that I think are in the medium range as far as output, some pickups may have more extreme high or low outputs so that may affect the tone when running through the profiles. Also, your means of monitoring have a huge impact on how you hear the profiles. There is no real way of making a profile sound the same on such a wide variety of speakers, headphones, studio monitors, frfr cabs, etc. Most speaker systems that claim to be “flat” or “frfr” still have many differences as is the nature of trying to create a two- or three- way speaker system. Personally, I tweak to Ultimate Ears UE7 ear monitors because that is what I use onstage and the frequency response is relatively flat compared to most headphones and studio monitors I’ve tried. That being said, the Kemper is powerful enough to tweak to fit whatever you’re using by using the EQ, both in the amp section and in the output section.

Beginning with Kemper firmware 7.0, the file types of Kemper rigs changed from .kipr to .krig. To import .kipr files into a Kemper that is already updated to 7.0 or higher, you will need to import the files into your Rig Manager’s “Local Library”, which automatically converts the file type to .krig. You can then drag/copy onto your Kemper within Rig Manager.

If you are using a Kemper with firmware prior to 7.0, your only safe choice is to updater your Profiler firmware and Rig Manager software from the Kemper web site.

If you are using 7.0 or newer and you are trying to download an older pack with .kipr files, you will need to import them into Rig Manager first to convert them.  Your 7.x Kemper will not recognize .kipr files so you can’t just put them in the “Shared” folder and use USB stick method.  I am working on making both types of file available for older packs.

Importing presets/IRs into the Line 6 products is a multi-step process. Line 6 doesn’t actually link the IR to the preset. Rather, it links an IR “location” to the preset, so the IR doesn’t travel with the preset like it does in Atomic or Fractal products.

To import the presets/IRs, you need to use the Line 6 HX Edit software to communicate with your device. Once you download the files (presets and IRs), make sure you know where to find them. Then, connect your device and launch the HX Edit software.

-You can import presets under the PRESETS tab on the top left. Select an open preset or one you want to write over and click IMPORT to import a preset to that location, then navigate to the folder with the new files in them.
-Then under the IMPULSES tab, do the same thing and import the IRs you want to use to available IR locations.
-Once the presets and IRs are loaded into the device, you must “pair” the appropriate IR with the particular preset(s). To do this, you must highlight the IR block in each preset and select the matching IR from the list of available IRs using the .pdf that comes with the preset pack. This is a map to show you which IRs I’ve paired with each preset.

A couple of reasons, really. The first is that I really like the cab/speaker combination because it sounds fairly neutral to my ears. Some speakers have such a sound that no matter what amp you put into them, the overall sound is colored so much by the speaker that the speaker tone is more prominent than the amp tone.

Secondly, in a practical live application, if you are switching profiles of different amps and cabs and speakers, the tonal difference can be so great that it takes your (or the audience’s ears) 10 seconds or so to “catch up” to the new eq curve. This is not a good thing. I’ve been using the Kemper live and in the studio for over 6 years now and I find that I hear the differences in amps but not the severe tonal shifts that different cabs and speakers would provide when changing profiles.

If you truly want a different speaker sound, it’s super easy to copy/paste cabs from other rigs or import IRs/cabs, but I find this method works best in most applications.
